The Importance of Design for Start-ups
Many start-ups focus on technology and service ideas, but the factor that really makes a big difference could be something else: design. From a consumer’s perspective, good design is subliminal, yet very powerful. These are the three aspects most important to designing for a small business startup.
1. Product UI/UX (usability)
When it comes to web/mobile services, design for the product is more important than most of other industries. in this era of countess apps and services, the major key differentiators could simply be the ease of use.
Imagine how some super simple services such as Twitter, YouTube and Instagram got so popular without having uber unique technologies behind them. They stick onto the single purpose and make that purpose easier to access than anything else on the market. Simplicity is key. By adding more features, you often sacrifice usability.
2. Marketing (communication)
Designing your marketing campaign is powerful for start-ups because you cangain just as much exposure as the big dogs with online marketing. The biggest key element for online marketing is your website. A poorly designed website shows just the opposite. Even if you offer great products, users aren’t getting the best impression and will make assumptions quickly about who you are.
Use your brand to develop the design, and then carry that through to Twitter, Facebook, and whatever else the kids are using nowadays. Every interaction sends a message to your audience, so make sure they are getting the best one possible.
3. Branding (perception)
For start-ups, branding can often take a backseat to other considerations, such as funding and product development. This is a mistake, as a company’s brand can make or break you in the first year.
A brand identity must be unique, memorable and simple in form. It does not need to say exactly what the company does, but rather ensure that people will react in a positive way to your identity. Social media provides the easiest tools to help measure what people perceive your brand. Learning how to listen for feedback and respond with thoughtful changes is invaluable. It’s like real life—with strong communication, creativity, willingness to change and hard work, people will take notice.
